Illustration by Cristóbal Schmal A.K.A. Nomono

I have a new favourite illustrator today, Cristobal Schmal A.K.A. Nomono. He was born in Africa, Chile, worked as a graphic designer in Barcelona for 7 years and is currently a freelance illustrator living in Berlin.
His colours and bold shapes are just so pleasing to the eye but most of all I love his use of overprinting and the textures in his work. Check out his site here!

Kemistry Gallery - Shoreditch

I love it when you go somewhere and find a better version of where you where going on the way. Yesterday I went for a wander down to the White Cube gallery in Shoreditch to see a show when on the way I happened upon the Kemistry Gallery in a close-by lane. They had an amazing show on modern Polish Poster Design with work from Warsaw-based studio 'Homework'. There was also some nice work by on-going artists working with the gallery all in poster form for purchase. I may just have to buy a few to cover up the cracks in the walls of my new room. I particulary liked the wood-block prints of Polish-born Roman Klonek (see duck with lighting-bolt eyes above). Also loved the typographical illustrations of Come de Bouchony, a French illustrator and designer.

London town

Well the move has been made from Melbourne to London, I've been here about a month now and not had the time to do much illustration until now that I have my own room in Clapham. It's currently pretty uninspiring besides that when I look out the window there's a tree with a squirrel living in it, I named him Hector and plan to feature him in my work soon. It's been a busy and cold month but more coming up soon!

Bustin' surfboards

Aw yeah, my ultimate dream.. drawing bears acting like people for a living! Well I'm not quite there but I did just win the 'Mooks and Monster Children Artspace' comp on the theme 'surfing'. Yay! I suspected a surfing bear might be a little weird for some but apparently it just hit the mark! Watch out for a page on me in the new Monster Children this month. Part of the prize involved a full page advert/promo for Mooks featuring myself looking 'natural' mime drawing away as I usually do ie. standing up at a table with a mooks hoodie on indoors. Check it here!

Post Zero

Welcome to 'These days', this is my first post so I'm going to put up some recent (and old) developments in my illustrating.

First of all is illustration work I did for the new INQ Mobile 'Chat 3G' phone. I was lucky enough to be selected as a featured illustrator for their new phone's help cards and on their new site (which I quite like the design of).

Secondly is a poster design which I sent in to Don't Panic was chosen as a runner-up in a recent competition for whisky label 'Cutty Sark'. I also awesomely won a case of 12 bottles for my efforts. Unfortunately I only received the prize a week before re-locating to London! Despite rather weak efforts at getting through it (can't say I'm a whisky fan) it proved profitable to friends and family and I didn't need to spend a cent for 'going away' gifts. I also made it onto the new Cutty Sark site, check it out.

Stay tuned for some bloggidge in the near future..
